How can I cover up the wallpaper seams of the old wallpaper in my house?

The seams of the old wallpaper are showing. Would applying joint compound over them and then sanding to smooth it out work? thanks
I was planning on just painting over the wallpaper, as it is hiding the imperfections of the wall underneath and is glued on very fimrly.

We moved into a new build flat in January. We weren’t given any guidance on if/when we can re-decorate, but others have said you are not meant to put wallpaper up straight away in a new build.
