How do I stop my cats scratching my wallpaper.?

I have two adult cats, I have bought a scratching post for them and yes they do use it, however they have this habit of scratching my wallpaper, i have caught them in the act and shouted they stop but theyre both ruining my walls, I only decorated my living room a few months ago! Any advice to stop this behaviour?

There are a couple of ways of breaking this habit. You can temporarily cover that section of wallpaper with either aluminium foil or a sheet of heavy duty plastic. Cats don’t like scratching on smooth surfaces, so this is often enough to deter them.

Another method is to get double sided sticky tape, wire netting or Prickler wall strips and put these on the floor (in front of that section of wallpaper) where the cat’s back legs are while it scratches. This will feel uncomfortable underfoot to them and if they don’t want to stand there they won’t be able to scratch.

Feliway can also help prevent unwanted scratching. Generally cats don’t scratch areas that they chin rub and Feliway mimics that scent. Spraying the affected area once a day for 21 days with Feliway can break the habit. (Though Feliway is safe to use on most surfaces and fabrics, you might want to test it on a hidden area first just to be on the safe side).

Out of curiosity is the wallpaper textured? It’s said that cats are attracted to scratch surfaces with a vertical thread. If it’s the texture of the wallpaper they enjoy, it’s worth providing your cats with some sheets of corrugated cardboard to scratch on as an alternative to the post.

    Hope this helps.

My cat just likes to strech and here the sound of her claws on the wall. She doesn’t actually scratch the wallpaper. Try clipping their claws down as far as you can without cuting the blood vein that is in their claws and maybe this will cut out some of the damage. Also, a friend told me about a spray that you can get that she used for her ferret but it works for cats and dogs too. You spray it on an area that you don’t want them near and then rub some on their tounge. It taste bitter and they will associate the smell with the taste and stay away from that area…

    Hope I helped a little. :D

There is no need to declaw them.

You can take the edge off it by trimming the tips of their claws (only cut the clear tips the white bit is nerves).

Hide and when they are clawing spray them with a water bottle. If they see you they will only claw when you are not around, if they don’t see you they associate clawing with water.

Once they learn to scratch anything like the scratching post, they will start scratching other things too. Because they love doing those stuff. Like my cat, it always scratch a pile of wood, later on it started to scratch a piece of cardboard. because he loving to do that. The reason why cats like to scratch is to make their claws more sharper (i think). Try to differentiate between the front leg and the behind. You will found out that the front will be more sharper than the behind leg. If my answer is wrong, you may ask another question.

Please, do not cut the claws…very harmful. About the spray, even though it works or not. Still do not do it.

i could do you a realllllly good kitty vindaloo. that would solve the problem. sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. although in this case it would be a good favour. and a good flavour.
