How do I take down wallpaper off of old plaster and keep the plaster in good condition?

The wallpaper, which is very old, has been painted. The plaster is probably at least 50 years old, possibly 100.

Would steaming do the trick?

Anyone have any thoughts? Much appreciated!

…..my least favorite job…my friend bought some spray which I used liberally…and it worked surprisingly well along with a plastic type trowel scraper and ice scraper….we had drywall which is ….I would think….more fragile than plaster of any age…..steaming….try on small spot….also depends on glue type……sprays were impressive to me……always try trial area for results first……..just in case the solvent turns the plaster green from the chemicals or something bizarre……good luck…..maybe a home remedy of ammonia and water? any readers input???

The steamer is the best option. The plaster will actually hold up better than wall board.

STEAMING IS A GOOD CHOICE AND PRETTY FAST

spray it with warm soapy water in a hand pump sprayer 3 to 4 times a day for a couple of days. If it is only 1 layer thick it may not take that long. If it is 2 to 3 layers thick, it could take longer but start scraping with a putty knife to remove the loosened areas and then spray it again when you are done scraping.

The best thing I have used is a product called DIF remover. You can get it at Home Depot

50-100 year old paper good luck. The paste that was used back then may need a tool called a Tigers Paw it has a wheel with penitration needles that you drag across the surface of the paper to allow a removal agent called Dif to work behind the paper.Read the instructions for saturation times. Then remove the paper with a scraper,or drywall knife.
You can by Dif from Lowes or Home Depot.
