How hard is it to get wallpaper off?

My fiance and I are moving into a house this week that had wallpaper borders on two of the rooms. We want to remove those borders since they are for children’s rooms and we have no children. We’ve both never had to worry about removing wallpaper before so we are completely lost!

What are the steps to taking off a wallpaper border and is it very hard?
Thanks so much everyone!!!

It may take a little time, depending on how it was put up, but you can do it. Start with a bucket of the hottest water you can stand and a sponge. Soak a section of the border and let it sit for a few minutes. Peel off the face and repeat for the backing. The backing comes off easily if you use a 6" taping knife or putty knife. After you get it down, go over the area with steel wool and hot water to remove the adhesive. Hope this helps.

First, see if it peels off easily. There are basically three types of wallpaper: Some with sort of a cloth back come right off. Others peel off the surface of the paper, but leave a tan coating of paper behind. And some won’t peel off at all when they’re dry.

If you have the second or third kind, you need to get it wet. Get a wide putty knife. One with a blade 3 inches wide would be fine. Then, get a bucket of warm water and get the paper as wet as you can. Go over it two or three times. It should come off easily. If you have to scrape too hard, you didn’t get it wet enough.

The glue that holds the wallpaper on is water-soluble, so getting the glue wet is the key. If the surface of the wallpaper is shiny, it may resist water, so scratch the surface so some water soaks through.

Plain water usually does the trick, but if you have very stubborn wallpaper, you can get a product called DIF at any hardware store or Home Depot. Get the gel kind and spread it on. Let it soak in for a while, then scrape. Last resort, you can rent a wallpaper steamer, but that shouldn’t be necessary for just a border.

It all depends on how much glue the contractors used as to tell how easy it will be to take it off. when i redid my bedroom in high school 3 years back it just pulled off in panels because there was next to no glue used. but an easy way is to get a spray bottle and put warm water in it and soak the walls with it and get a scraper and scrape it that way. the more damp it is the easier to pull it off you can also get tools for it at like ace or true value that helps tear up the paper hope i helped camille

Home Depot, Menards, and Lowes all offer a wall paper removal kit that includes a type of cloth material that you soak with hot water and then apply to the wallpaper, letting it set for awhile. The cloth material makes it very easy to remove the wallpaper.

Steam strippers work most efficiently when top layer of paper have been removed, exporting the more absorbent backing. To soften the old wallpaper paste, soak the paper with with warm water and a little dishwashing liquid or use a commercial stripping liquid.

Apply the solution with a sponge or houseplant sprayer.
Repeat and leave the water to penetrate for 15 to 20 minutes.
Use a wide metal bladed scraper to lift the softened paper, starting at the seam.
Take care not to dig the point of the blade into the plaster.
Resoak stubborn areas of paper and leave them for a few minutes before stripping.

just doing borders shouldn’t take very long at all. i helped my gran do half her house. one room took probably less than an hour so borders will take no time at all
